The AI Assistants settings page lets an account owner control two AI features:
- UserVoice agent: an AI assistant built into your admin console. Admins can ask questions about ideas, accounts, users, and themes, and make changes after confirming them.
- UserVoice MCP: lets admins and contributors connect their own AI tool, such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Codex, to your UserVoice data.
Each feature has its own setting, so you can turn on one, both, or neither. Not sure which you need? See UserVoice Agent vs UserVoice MCP.
Before You Start
- You must be an account owner. Owners are admins with the Can manage and update settings permission. Other admins can open the page but can’t change anything. Instead they see “Only account owners can change these settings.”
- Your plan must include AI features. If it doesn’t, AI Assistants is greyed out under Integrations. Reach out to us to talk about upgrading!
Step 1: Review Your Admin Permissions
The agent and MCP both act with each admin’s own permissions. Whatever an admin can see or change in UserVoice, they can also see or change through AI. Before you turn either feature on, take a few minutes to make sure everyone has the access you want.
- Click the Settings icon (cog) in the left-hand menu.
- Go to General Settings → Users & Permissions.
- Click each admin and check their permissions.
What to look for:
| Permission | What It Means for AI |
|---|---|
| Feedback: Can view & edit | The admin can ask the agent, or their AI tool, to change ideas: update statuses and labels, merge, delete, and so on. They confirm each change first. |
| Feedback: Can view | View only. The admin can ask questions, but they can’t make changes through AI. |
| Settings: Can manage and update settings | Account owner. They can turn the agent and MCP on or off. |
| Contributor | Can connect an AI tool through MCP with read-only access. They can search and ask questions about your feedback, but they can’t create ideas, add feedback, or make changes. Contributors can’t use the UserVoice agent. |
Some changes made through AI notify your customers, the same way they do when made by hand. For example, a public status change emails the idea’s contributors. Give edit access only to admins who should be making those changes.
For more detail, see Setting Permissions for Admins & Contributors.
Step 2: Turn a Feature On or Off
- Sign in to your UserVoice admin console.
- Go to Settings → Integrations.
- Click AI Assistants.
- Under UserVoice Agent, select Enable UserVoice Agent or Disable UserVoice Agent.
- Under MCP access, select Enable Access to MCP (AI Agents) or Disable Access to MCP (AI Agents).
Your change saves as soon as you select an option. There’s no Save button.
Step 3: Let Your Team Know
- UserVoice agent: admins can start using it right away in the admin console. See UserVoice Agent.
- MCP: each admin and contributor connects their own AI tool and signs in with their own UserVoice login. See Connect UserVoice to Claude, ChatGPT, or Codex.
What Each Setting Controls
UserVoice Agent: turns on the agent in the admin console. Admins can ask questions about ideas, accounts, users, and themes. Admins with feedback edit access can also ask it to make changes, and they confirm each one first.
MCP Access: lets admins and contributors connect an AI tool to search, summarize, and work with your feedback. The AI tool can see and change only what that person can. Contributors have read-only access.
What Happens When You Turn One Off
- UserVoice agent off: admins can no longer use the agent.
- MCP access off: every connected AI tool loses access right away, including connections admins already set up. If a connection doesn’t work after you turn MCP back on, reconnect it from the AI tool.
Common Questions
Q: I don’t see AI Assistants, or it’s greyed out.
A: Your plan doesn’t include AI features. Click the link under AI Assistants to schedule a call about upgrading.
Q: The options are greyed out and the page says “Your account has requested no AI functionality.”
A: AI features are turned off for your account at your request. To change this, contact UserVoice support.
Q: I’m an admin but can’t change these settings.
A: Only account owners can change them. Ask your account owner, or see Change the Account Owner.
Q: Does turning on MCP give anyone access to our data?
A: No. Each admin or contributor still has to connect their own AI tool and sign in with their own UserVoice login. The tool acts with that person’s permissions.
Q: Does turning on the agent change any data?
A: No. The agent only makes a change when an admin asks for one and confirms it.
Q: Can I limit what an admin can do with AI?
A: Yes. AI follows each admin’s permissions, so update their access in Users & Permissions. For example, set Feedback to Can view to make an admin read-only.
